So, if you want to know the five delightful ways essential oils can soothe itchy scalp and give the best for our crowning glory, read on lovely.

1. Relieving the itch with good ol' essential oils

Coming up on number 1, we are going straight to the best among the rest coz why save the best for last?

Yes, you read that right, essential oils can relieve the itch.

"Seborrheic dermatitis" on the scalp or better known as dandruff is characterized by:

  • Skin flakes on your scalp
  • Itchy scalp
  • Scaly, crusty scalp

Among all these symptoms, the itch is the most irritating to deal with.

It doesn’t really look or feel good to scratch your head all the time – with the itch only intensifying with every scratch.

Luckily for our DIY-ing hearts, essential oils can help with the itch, specifically peppermint oil.

In various studies regarding the topical application of peppermint oil (mentha x piperita), the oil’s ability to reduce the itchiness of the skin is studied extensively.

Different data found on this benefit ensures we can surely observe this effect on our skin – including our scalp.

In this study, as little as 5% peppermint oil is needed to relieve chronic itchiness.

No need to scratch the heck out of our scalp after using DIY hair oil, mask, or leave-in conditioner with peppermint oil!

2. How to control the flakes of your itchy scalp

You know the feeling after a great shower?

You blow dry your hair. You run your fingers through the

strands, loving how soft it is. But then you look over your shoulder and see yellowish white flakes peppered all over…

Sadly, the flakes come with the itch.

But, do not lose hope because essential oils got us covered!

A review of studies in 2015, along with many more studies before and after, has shown several essential oils help in controlling dandruff, including the peppering of flakes.

review of studies in 2015, along with many more studies before and after, has shown several essential oils help in controlling dandruff, INCLUDING the peppering of flakes.

These oils are the following:

  • Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
  • Garlic (Allium sativum L.)
  • Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)
  • Peppermint (mentha x piperita)
  • Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.)

Don’t you love how great of a player peppermint oil is! Apart from the soothing effect it gives for the itch, it also helps control dandruff along with all these oils.

Creating the right DIY product for your scalp will be much simpler with such a

lovely team of oils.

3. Essential oils can ease the pain

After all the hard-to-resist scratching comes the pain.

If you’re very vigorous in the scratching action, your scalp can suffer from wounds all over. Not fun.

Good thing for us essential oils can help ease the pain!

Noted for its pain-relieving qualities, eucalyptus oil (E. globulus) can provide relief to itchy, painful skin rashes by providing moisture. According to this study, eucalyptus does this by increasing the level of ceramides in human skin, improving the water-holding and

barrier functions.

With better-moisturized skin comes faster healing!

And of course, when we talk about healing, we can’t just ignore lavender oil.

Lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia) is best known for its ability to help with the healing process of wounds.

After toning down the itch and controlling the flakes, ease the pain with one or both of these oils.

4. Essential Oils Can repair the damage

Let’s face it.

Even after reducing the pain, all the scratching will leave our

scalp somewhat worse for wear.

Healed wounds feel great but don’t necessarily look great.

What our scalp needs next is some damage repair.

Roman chamomile oil (Anthemis nobilis) contains a high level of esters .

These esters replace the natural esters in our skin, which are responsible for keeping the skin smooth and giving protection.

When skin becomes dry and irritated, as it is with dandruff, an essential oil with a high level of esters will do just the trick to

soothe and soften skin.

Soothed and softened skin is just what we want after the whole scratch wounds ordeal.

5. Essential oils can moisturize

After getting everything– the itch, flakes, wounds—under control, we need to insert some measures to prevent dandruff from worsening or happening ever again.

Dry skin or oily but irritated skin are some of the common causes of dandruff.

Whether the scalp is leaning oily or dry, dandruff develops when we fail to give some extra TLC—tender love and care—to our scalp.

One way of giving some extra sprinklings of TLC is by keeping our scalp well-moisturized. And in this area, essential oils can definitely help!

On their own, essential oils cannot provide moisturizing effects to our scalp. But combined to carrier oils, EOs that have moisturizing constituents can boost the ability of our DIY products in giving our scalp the love it needs.

Some essential oils that can help with moisture are the following:

  • (Roman) Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis)
  • Eucalyptus (E. globulus)
  • Sandalwood (Santalum album)

In summary, here are the delightful ways essential oils can soothe itchy scalp:

  1. Essential oils can relieve the itch.
  2. Essential oils can help control the flakes.
  3. Essential oils can ease the pain.
  4. Essential oils can repair the damage.
  5. Essential oils can moisturize.
