5 best oils for dry skin - Pretty Blooming

Out of all skin types, dry skin is probably one of the most, if not the most, tedious to care for. You know you have dry skin when there is visible flaking and cracking on your skin. It wouldn't be too bad if not for the fact that not being able to properly care for dry skin may lead to serious skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) or infections. These conditions not only take its toll on your health and wellness but also your self-esteem and confidence.

There are many ways to prevent dry skin from worsening, and even super easy ways to temporarily fix the condition such as applying moisturizers and lotions. But these usually only render a short-term fix for the problem, which means the moment you forget to apply your products, your skin will just go back to how it was. Sometimes, people also develop an adverse reaction to over-the-counter products because of the chemicals mixed into them and only end up worsening their condition. It's just too much work!

According to experts, the best solution to dry skin would be natural oils-- I totally agree! I've always been an advocate of all-natural products because they obviously have less to zero chemicals, making them very safe for daily use. If you haven't tried these yet, fear not-- I have come up with a list of the best oils for dry skin, and I'll also be talking a bit on what they are for so that you'd have an idea of the oil that would best suit your skin type. Read on and find out!

Why use essential oils for dry skin?

Sure, there are thousands of products you can use for dry skin. You can pretty much buy them everywhere these days. The problem is, these products can be pretty expensive and their effects are somehow temporary or only lasts for as long as you keep using that specific product. What's even worse is that you might end up having a reaction to the products you buy, due to its ingredients mixed into them.

This is why essential oils are one of the best remedies to soothe and relieve dry skin. Aside from being gentle and safe for the skin, they're very affordable and leave your skin supple and healthier!

If you're still not 100% convinced, here are some more reasons why adding essential oils to your regimen is well worth doing:

  • A little goes a long way. Essential Oils are more affordable than pricey creams and lotions. The oils are highly concentrated and you only need a few drops to prepare a soothing serum or cream that will last a month or longer.
  • Essential oils have therapeutic properties. Incorporating them into your skin care can have a beneficial effect on overall well-being. Essential oils can help reduce anxiety, improve happiness, promote clarity.
  • Unlike some creams and lotions, essential oils don't leave a greasy residue behind. This makes them suitable for both dry and oily skin.
  • Essential oils can help your skin feel better while combating dry skin by moisturizing it and reducing the development of signs of aging like wrinkles, spots, and discolorations

1. Carrot Seed Essential Oil

Quite different from Carrot Oil, which is extracted from carrot roots, Carrot Seed Oil is extracted through steam distillation of the seeds of Daucus Carotam, a.k.a. 'wild carrot plant'. It naturally regulates the skin’s sebum production, which prevents too little or excess sebum on the skin-- this makes it perfect for both oily and dry skin.

Carrot Seed Oil also contains antioxidant properties due to which it works as a sunscreen of some sort and offers natural protection from the sun. It is rich in Vitamin E and C, which protect the skin from harmful factors. When it comes to dry and damaged skin, this oil is well-known for skin-repair and has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. When diluted in a carrier oil and applied to the skin, it soothes rosacea.

Being a rich source of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, this oil is a very powerful tool to moisturize dry skin and offers provides protection and prevention of skin breakouts. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce irritation and burning, leaving the skin moisturized and supple, which makes it one of the best essential oils for dry skin.

My favorite thing about using Rose Oil is that it not only hydrates dry skin, it also visibly reduces signs of skin aging and helps prevents wrinkles form forming. Aside from that, it is very helpful in treating elevated dry skin problems such as rosacea and eczema.

Although it has been used for skin care since ancient Egyptian time, Geranium Oil is not as common as the previously discussed essential oils. This oil is sourced from the stems, leaves, and flowers of the geranium plant. It is commonly used for aromatherapy and as a holistic treatment to improve physical, mental and emotional health.

When it comes to skin care, Geranium Oil can be used for a variety of skin conditions -- from oily and acne-prone skin, to dry skin, eczema, and dermatitis. 5. Apricot Kernel Oil

Last but not least, we have Apricot Kernel Oil. Not many people are aware of the benefits of this oil, especially when it comes to skin care. It can be used as a skin scrub when mixed with sugar-- it's a wonderful exfoliator, leaving the skin glowing and radiant!

It's on our list for a reason-- Apricot Seed Oil contains vitamins A and E, and high amounts of fatty acids which, together, are amazing in moisturizing dry and mature skin.

You may not know it, but this oil can actually be found in most soaps and skincare products. Because it's very light, it is very easily absorbed by the skin and does not leave any excess oil or residue. Apricot Kernel Oil is a carrier type of oil. This means (like other all carrier oils) it can be the base of your oil blends, moisturizers, and serums. Now you know which are the 4 best essential oils for dry skin and one of the most suitable carrier oils to use with them.

Be sure to dilute your essential oils properly before applying to your skin. These oils are so concentrated and potent that applying them (neat) topically may result in skin irritation.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it, my Top 5 Essential Oils for dry skin! Based on experience and feedback, these oils basically have the same effects, it only varies slightly such as when it comes to the scent and feel. I am such a fan of essential oils because they are definitely the most awesome natural remedies I've ever encountered. In fact, I call them 'liquid gold'. There are literally oils for every skin issue, and some can even work both ways!

However, it is important to remember that these are NOT meant to be used directly onto the skin. Essential oils are strong and have to be diluted in a carrier oil before use. To use essential oils for dry skin, you’ll need to dilute them with a carrier oil.
