Can makeup be harmful?

Makeup is something that we wear to enhance our personal appearance and self-esteem and many of us will probably never ditch it.

I used to choose my makeup based on factors like shades, colors, coverage, thickness and so on. The makeup brand was also important, as I though the more I pay, the better the product is.

Since I switched from using store-bought skin care to mostly natural remedies and DIYs I become very conscious about everything I put on my skin. I started reading labels on mascaras, foundations and lipsticks. I turned that big brands that I trusted and considered to offer superior quality makeup, contain compounds that can make my skin age faster and give me acne.

Non-toxic makeup?

So I decided to find makeup that is completely free of artificial colors, artificial fragrances, synthetic chemicals, preservatives and all other toxins. Well, that wasn't easy. Adding the fact that I care about animals and will only use a piece of makeup if it hasn't been tested on animals, the number of brands I could choose from was significantly narrowed down. The good news is those brands do exist.

However this post is't meant to focus on brands but on the reasons to switch from makeup that can give you allergic reactions to a completely natural and non-toxic makeup.

Let's have s look!

Why Switch To Natural Makeup

Reason #1 - No Harsh Chemicals

Substances like parabens and phthalates are extensively used in cosmetics. According to this study from 2010, both are linked to cancer and type II diabetes.

In previous posts I wrote about the harm of sulfates and mineral oil  and why you should not let neither of them close to your cosmetics.

Although the makeup products using those substances may be effective for improving complexion appearance, this is only temporarily. Due to the chemicals they contain, some makeup products can be very harsh on the skin and may promote irritation and allergic reaction. And this is definitely not going to help one's skin looks its best.

Choosing a brand that does not rely on chemicals to create texture or coverage, you will prevent dry and dull skin in the short run and more serious conditions like rosacea and eczema in the long run.

Why Switch To Natural Makeup

Reason #2 - Natural Fragrance

The factors we choose lipstick are scent, color, coverage, glossiness and so on. For me scent has always been very important. It's like when I make my food, so should my lipstick smell good. And this is very common among cosmetic products' customers. What determiners the products' worthiness is whether it looks or smells good.

Unfortunately, intense fruity, flowery scents often owe their mesmerizing scent to a mixture of chemicals. And these chemicals can be inhaled throughout the day by people who wear those beauty products.

Consequences of using products with artificial aromas

Artificial aromas can be very dangerous for the body. This study has linked them to cancer, nervous system disorders and allergies.

When using such makeup products, only we inhale these chemicals into our lungs, we also expose our skin to these toxins. Therefore when choosing beauty products, always make sure that the scents are obtained from 100% natural ingredients.

Scents fro essential oils

It's my opinion that essential oils make the best natural perfumes and remedies. You can use them in various ways to enhance your health and mood.

Reason #3 - Natural Colors

What are artificial colors?

Artificial colors are chemical additives that change the shade of eye shadows, foundations, blushes, powders, lipsticks, mascaras, etc.  These colorants are often made up from a variety of synthetic chemicals. Even when carefully reading the ingredients' label, it can be extremely difficult to know exactly what you’re exposing your skin to.

The impact of artificial colors in your makeup

The toxins that artificial colors contain increase your risk of sensitivity and irritation. They can also clog your pores, which leads to a greater risk of acne. Those chemicals can be absorbed into your body, where they can cause even greater damage. Some dyes are associated with cancer, allergic reactions and hyperactivity.

Unfortunately, there aren't many restrictions on the types of dyes that can be added to makeup products. If you’re dedicated to avoid them, yous should look for natural makeup.

Do you wonder what are the alternatives of synthetic colorants? For primary colors, you’ll find ingredients like beet root powder, pomegranate powder, turmeric powder, woad powder, etc.

Why Switch To Natural Makeup

Reason #4 - Non-Comedonic

Those of us suffering from acne are most likely aware with the notions comedonic and non-comedonc. Basically comedonic makeup are all products that may trigger comedones.

Acne in general is the result of bacteria and dead skin clogging your pores. Comedonic products simply contribute the process of clogging your pores.

Makeup labeled "non-comedogenic" is less likely to clog pores and contribute to acne.

Look out for makeup made of natural ingredients and free from mineral oil.

Why Switch To Natural Makeup

Reason #5 - Nourishing

Your skin is your biggest organ and has the ability to absorb certain nutrients. The skin has a protective barrier which to some extent is able to keep dangerous substances out of the body. Unfortunately this barrier can't protect you from all compounds in your makeup.

Imagine how much better it would be if instead of harming and damaging your skin, your makeup is actually nourishing it.

A rule of thumb here should be: if you can’t eat it, don’t wear it. Of course this shouldn't be interpreted literally. The idea is that you can find makeup brands which for their products use natural ingredients like cocoa butter, shea butter, rose oil, fruit pigmentation, essential oils, extracts of white tea, grapes, apricots, and pomegranate seeds...

Options are endless. These kind or products are not only innocently safe but they also provide antioxidant protection to keep the youthful look of your skin.
